About the Author

Faith L. Justice has worked as a lifeguard, paralegal, systems analyst, human resources executive, college professor, freelance writer and novelist. It’s not that she can’t keep a job; it’s that there’s always something new to learn.  She writes in her historic land-marked home “The Suffragette House” in Brooklyn, New York where she lives with her husband and the required gaggle of cats. Her adult daughter made her mother proud by becoming a librarian. For fun, Faith likes to dig in the dirt—her garden and various archaeological sites.

Her most recent book is Rebel Empress: A Novel of of Imperial Rome (Book Three of the Theodosian Women series). The first novel in the series, Twilight Empress: A Novel of Imperial Rome, won first place in the Historical category in the Maryland Writer’s Association contest. Dawn Empress: a Novel of Imperial Rome (Theodosian Women Book Two) was Editor’s Choice in the Historical Novel Reviews. A prequel novella for the series: Becoming the Twilight Empress is also available. Her debut novel Selene of Alexandria was a finalist in the Global eBook Awards in 2011. In addition, Faith published a 1C “lesbian gladiator” novel titled Sword of the Gladiatrix.  She is currently working on a sequel.  All of her novels earned Readers’ Favorite 5-star reviews.

Faith’s newest venture is a series of middle-grade, illustrated chapter books featuring stories of adventurous girls inspired by traditional folk tales. Tokoyo, the Samurai’s Daughter is out now.  Her short stories and poems have appeared in such publications as Alternate Realities, The Copperfield Review and Beyond Science Fiction and Fantasy. Her story “Better the Devil” appears in the Circles in the Hair anthology and garnered honorable mentions in both The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror: Nineteenth Collection and the Writers of the Future Contest. She’s collected some of her best short stories in three volumes: Time Again and Other Fantastic Stories, Slow Death and Other Dark Tales and The Reluctant Groom and Other Historical Stories. Reluctant Groom was featured in the video “5 Engrossing Short Story Collections  Written by Women.” All her books are available from Raggedy Moon Books in print, eBook, and audio at all the usual places.

Faith collected her articles about Hypatia, Lady Philosopher of Alexandria (and a major character in Selene) in Hypatia: Her Life and Times. In addition, she’s published numerous non-fiction articles in venues such as Salon.com, Writer’s Digest (cover article), The Writer, and Bygone Days. Her creative non-fiction piece “A Child Like Me” appears in A Cup of Comfort for Parents of Children with Autism. Her complete list of writing credits are available here.

Faith was Chair (2018-2023) of the New York City Chapter of the Historical Novel Society and is still active on the Steering Committee. She is a current Associate Editor for Space and Time Magazine, and co-founded a writer’s workshop more years ago than she cares to admit.

On a more personal note…

Some readers like to know more about their favorite writers; something personal or inspirational about their lives or work. I don’t know why, because most of us lead very dull lives. But in the interest of sharing, here are:

“Five Fun Facts about Faith”

1. My sister’s name is Hope, and if there had been another girl, she would be named Charity. Hope is extremely grateful there were boys born between us. Mom always wanted to have three girls to name Faith, Hope and Charity. She just happened to marry a man named Justice. I don’t think she thought through the consequences of her naming scheme.
2. I was voted “Most likely to be first woman on the moon” by my junior high graduation class. Even then I had my head in the clouds.
3. I’m active in the feral cat community: conducting and supporting TNR (trap, neuter, return), feeding and sheltering community cats, and fostering cats and kittens until they find forever homes. I am not a crazy cat lady.
4.  I have country girl roots (from a village of 103) but love living in the big city where I don’t have to drive and everything is delivered. I satisfy my green thumb by growing vegetables and herbs in my yard and on my deck.
5. There’s another Faith Justice out there. Or there used to be. Someone called me (mumble, mumble years ago) when I served as president of the local chapter of the National Organization for Women, to ask if I was the same Faith Justice who used to be the president of a NOW chapter in Michigan. Something about the name?
